Visits Programme

The following visits are planned for CSTS members.

  • Note that for most visits we have to pay the venue in advance, so a member's place is only secured on receipt of their payment.   Should someone be unable to come on the visit, they are responsible for finding a replacement.  The visit secretary will assist, but is not able to obtain refunds.  
  • In many cases, the visits are joint with other interested local societies, to share the cost of transportation.  
  • When paying to the CSTS by internet (much preferred!), please use sort code 40-52-40, account no. 00016646 and include the payment reference given in the detail of the visit.  If paying by cheque please send it to the visit organiser and write the visit reference on the reverse.
  • In many cases, the visits are joint with other interested local societies, to share the cost of transportation.
    • Unfortunately, to ensure the success of everybody's day we are not able to wait more than 5 minutes after the stated departure time.

National Oceanographic Centre, Southampton

The National Oceanographic Centre(NOC) is the UK’s centre of excellence for oceanographic sciences, with a remit to provide national capability and leadership for big ocean science. 

NOC addresses four big challenges:

  • Securing clean energy, minerals and other resources.
  • Protecting people and property from natural disasters like coastal flooding and extreme weather.
  • Protecting the future productive capacity of the oceans ecosystems.
  • Making sense of global scale environmental changes.     

 Our visit will include:

  • An overview of the history of oceanography, covering some of the historic items in the NOC collections.
  • An overview of the research vessels operated by the NOC
  • A visit to the University of Southampton Research Aquarium facility.
  • A visit to the British Ocean Sediment Core Research facility.
  • A tour of the Marine Robotics Innovation Centre and the future of marine science and the technology being developed.

 Timetable for the day:

8.30 am                    leave Cricklade Rugby Club car park
10.30-1.00 approx     tour of NOC, as above
1.00 -3.30                  free time
3.30                             leave Southampton
5.00 approx                 arrive in Cirencester

The Met Office, Exeter

The Met Office is the national weather service providing weather and climate related services to the armed forces, government departments, the public, civil aviation, shipping, industry, agriculture and commerce.

Our visit will include:

  • An overview presentation of the Met Office and its work.
  • A tour of the building, including a visit to the Operations Centre.
  • Visit to the National Meteorological Library.
  • A look at some of the observational equipment used today and in the past.
  • A meteorologist will give an overview of their work, including a briefing on the weather for the following week. 

Our timetable for the day:

  • 9.30 am                leave RAU Cirencester, you will be provided with a parking permit  
  • 12.00 – 2.00pm free time in Exeter
  • 2.00                         meet the coach to go to the Met Office
  • 3.00 – 5.30             Tour of the Met Office
  • 6.00 – 8.00              return journey to Cirencester
